Dirksen Center for Neurobehavioral Health

Many parents have concerns about their child's development, social skills, or early academic skills. Many times there is no readily identifiable reason, but concerns with development arise. Other times, there is a history of complications such as low birthweight, premature birth, seizure disorders, cerebral palsy, or a family history of Autism. In either case, early identification is key in helping identify appropriate services for your child.

Early assessment identifies development delays and provides a way to monitor development over time as the child grows. The Dirksen Center provides early developmental assessments conducted by neuropsychologists beginning at age 18 months. Following assessment, sometimes a diagnosis is appropriate, and sometimes not. In both cases, recommendations are provided to help address areas of weakness and the parent concerns. Common referrals include speech, occupational therapy, social skills groups, and behavior therapy.
